Step 1 – Consider the type of charge point required

There are many types of electric vehicle charging points (EVCP) available, whether they are for a commercial workplace, a public building, or a public area such as a town car park.

The first stage is to decide what type of EVCP you will require, based on 5 key factors :

  1. The location of the charge points and the power supply available.
  2. The speed of charge you need to offer people, based on how the charge point will be used.
  3. How you want to control access to the charge points.
  4. What reporting requirements you have, especially in the case of Benefit in Kind (BIK).
  5. If you want to charge people to use the EVCP, or offer its use for free.

Energeasy Drive can also help you to identify which charging solution is the best for your property and you can also use the Energeasy drive product selector .

An Energeasy Drive installer will also able to review the above with you, to help you select the ideal type of charge point.

Step 2 - Select an electric vehicle charge point installer

All Rexel Energeasy Drive installers purchase their EVCPs from, and work in partnership with Rexel . Step 3 – Survey

Your Rexel Energeasy Drive installer will discuss your charge point requirements with you and survey your property, to help establish the best location for them.  This would be discussed and confirmed with you after they have reviewed:

  • Access to the power supply.
  • Whether you currently have the required power supply for the installation proposed.
  • Any ground works that may be required.
  • Specific site requirements.
  • Any internal reporting functionality required
  • Future requirements – e.g. installing more charge points in line with the need to expand your charging infrastructure.
  • Installation costs.

Generally people look to install a charge point as close as possible to its power source. This would be ideal if you have a car parking space by an external wall, as a wall mounted charge point could be installed next to it. However, the installation may be best suited to a ground mounted pedestal away from the building itself, which would require ground works by laying a supply cable underground to the charge point in your car park.

  Step 4 – Purchase & installation

As all Rexel Energeasy Drive installers purchase their electric vehicle charge points from Rexel , you have the reassurance that all products supplied and installed by your Rexel Energeasy Drive installer have been through a strict due dilliengence process, are of a high quality and come supplied with full warranties.

Remember, always choose the type of EVCP based on how it will be used, rather than simply choose the least expensive one. For example, whilst a rapid speed charging point may be more expensive, it may be needed if you own a motorway cafe where people typically only spend up to 30 minutes on your premises. A less expensive, but slower charging point, would be of limited use to them.

Your Energeasy Drive installer can also help you with supplying any signage and protection barriers for your EVCPs if required.

Step 5 – Maintenance & Guarantee

Maintenance

If you are a commercial business or a public sector organisation and need to charge your organisation’s vehicles for business/operational reasons, a non-functioning charge point could be the equivalent of a petrol station running out of petrol/diesel when your car is running on empty!

A regular programme of annual preventative and emergency maintenance is key to ensuring your installation remains in operation and performs to its full potential, especially if it is set to transmit data - for example, to accept credit/debit bank cards as a form of payment for using the charge point. Your Energeasy Drive installer will be able to advise you about which maintenance packages are available from each charge point manufacturer.

Guarantee

As with any electrical equipment, a charge point should have a minimum of a 1 year guarantee on its parts and you may have the ability to take out an extended guarantee to cover you for the cost of replacement parts. Your Energeasy Drive installer will be able to advise you what standard and extended guarantees are available from each charge point manufacturer.

An Energeasy Drive installer will help you select the ideal type of charge point for your home. Typically most people charge their car overnight, but in some cases you may need a faster rate of charging if, for example, you work from home and use your vehicle for multiple trips during the day.
